Our founder, a lifelong herper named Mara Jennsen, spent over a decade keeping everything from crested geckos to sulcata tortoises to a particularly opinionated blue tongue skink named Biscuit. Along the way she noticed the same pattern again and again: pet store shelves and online marketplaces are flooded with UVB bulbs, enclosures, substrates, and supplements that all claim to be "the best," yet almost none of them come with honest, side-by-side information about how they actually perform. Reptile keepers were left guessing, often paying the price in stunted growth, metabolic bone disease, or enclosures that had to be replaced within a year. Basking Bay was built to close that gap.
Our Founding Story
In 2021, Mara started keeping a private spreadsheet comparing UVB output decay rates across popular bulb brands, testing them with a handheld Solarmeter against manufacturer claims. What began as a personal reference document for her own collection turned into something she couldn't stop sharing — first with a local reptile club, then with an online forum community of over 8,000 keepers. The response was overwhelming: people wanted more. More bulb comparisons, more enclosure teardown reviews, more honest talk about which substrates actually held humidity and which ones just looked good in photos.
By early 2022, Basking Bay had grown from a spreadsheet into a full website, with a small team of contributing keepers, a licensed exotic veterinarian consultant, and a dedicated testing space where products are put through their paces before a single word gets written.
Who's Behind the Site
Basking Bay is run by a small team of reptile and exotic pet keepers who have collectively kept and bred species across arid, tropical, and aquatic terrarium setups for more than 40 combined years. Our contributors include:
- Mara Jennsen, founder and lead reviewer, specializing in lighting, heating, and husbandry equipment for arid and tropical species.
- Dr. Owen Castellan, DVM, an exotic animal veterinarian who reviews our health and safety claims, particularly around supplements, enclosure materials, and heating devices.
- Priya Rourke, a reptile breeder specializing in leopard geckos and ball pythons, who focuses on incubation equipment and enclosure reviews.
- Dez Alvarado, an aquatic and semi-aquatic specialist covering turtle, axolotl, and amphibian supply reviews.
None of us are professional writers who picked up reptiles as a content niche — we're keepers first, who happen to write. Every product that comes through our doors gets handled by someone who has actually set up a bioactive enclosure at 2 a.m. or hand-fed a picky hatchling.
How We Review and Pick Products
We built our review process around one principle: if we wouldn't put it in our own enclosures, we won't recommend it in good conscience. Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Hands-on testing first. Whenever possible, we purchase products ourselves or request review units, and we physically test them — measuring UVB output with a Solarmeter 6.5, checking thermostat accuracy with calibrated probes, and running enclosures through real humidity and temperature gradients over at least two weeks.
- Comparative benchmarking. We don't review products in isolation. Every item is measured against at least two to three competitors in the same category so our ratings reflect relative performance, not just a product's own marketing claims.
- Veterinary and husbandry review. Any product with a direct impact on animal health — supplements, heating elements, UVB bulbs, substrates — is cross-checked by Dr. Castellan for safety concerns, ingredient quality, and alignment with current husbandry research.
- Real-world longevity checks. Where we can, we follow up on products weeks or months later to note wear, bulb decay, material degradation, or durability issues that don't show up in a first impression.
- Transparent sourcing. We disclose when a product was provided to us for free or at a discount, and we clearly separate paid partnerships from independent reviews. Affiliate links help fund our testing budget, but they never determine our ratings — we've recommended products with no affiliate program at all simply because they earned it.
We also maintain an open corrections policy. If a manufacturer changes a formula, a bulb's output specs shift, or new research changes best practices, we update the relevant review and note the revision date so readers always know they're looking at current information.
What Makes Basking Bay Trustworthy
We know the reptile and exotic pet space is full of affiliate-driven "best of" lists that were written in an afternoon without a single product ever leaving its box. We've built Basking Bay specifically to be the opposite of that:
- Every reviewer on our team personally keeps the type of animal they write about — we don't assign a bearded dragon review to someone who has never kept a bearded dragon.
- Our testing methodology is documented and consistent, so our 4-star rating today means the same thing it did a year ago.
- We maintain editorial independence from manufacturers. We've turned down sponsorship offers that came with strings attached, including requests to guarantee positive coverage.
- Our veterinary consultant reviews health-related claims before publication, not after a complaint rolls in.
- We're upfront about our limitations — if we haven't personally tested a product, we say so, and we rely on verified owner feedback and manufacturer specifications instead of presenting a guess as fact.
At the end of the day, Basking Bay exists because we remember what it felt like to stand in front of a wall of reptile supplies, unsure which $200 enclosure or $15 supplement was actually worth it. We built the resource we wish we'd had when we started, and we keep testing, keep updating, and keep writing because the animals in our care — and yours — deserve better than a guess.
Thank you for trusting us to help you make informed decisions for the exotic companions who depend on you. If you have a product you'd like us to test, a correction to flag, or simply a question about husbandry, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.
